Black Bully American Bulldogs, the MIURA LINEOctober 7, 2015
BLACK AMERICAN BULLDOGS have been in the breed since its beginning.
This subject was debated at length, until historical facts sedated all unsubstantiated “opinions”.
Here is another opportunity to get it right!!
It has nothing to do with likes and dislikes, or personal agendas, it is just documented, historical data:
JOHN D. JOHNSON AND ALAN SCOTT ARE UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED AS THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF THE “AMERICAN BULLDOG”.
THEY HAD DIFFERENT IDEAS ABOUT WHAT AN AB SHOULD LOOK LIKE BUT THEY ALSO SHARED A COMMON VISION IN REGARD TO MANY POINTS.
THEIR COOPERATION LED TO THE DEFINITION OF THE ORIGINAL AMERICAN BULLDOG STANDARD, AN OUTLINE THAT DIDN’T DISMISS BLACK AB.
The Original American Bulldog Standard
(Established by John D. Johnson and Alan Scott on July 7 1970 BBC an accepted in 1975)
General Appearance: Tall, stands erect with head held high, with back straight neither swayed nor ridged. The tail should be held down approximately to the hocks, chest wide moderate and deep. Head: Broad, flat on top, squared appearance with muzzle short to medium in length, with a prominent dish between eyes. Lower jaw should protrude slightly more than the upper jaw, with wide apart eyes. Ears medium in size with a roll backwards or a flop.
Temperament: Very friendly in daytime, but very aggressive at night, especially with the person not known. This dog should be eager, bold, and trusting with no signs of fear or timidity. Aggressive enough to fight a mean bear, or wild hog, but gentle enough for a house pet.
COLOR: White, to all brindle colors, with white to solid brindle, SOLID BLACK, or BLACK MIXED WITH BRINDLE OR WHITE.
Size: Males from 22 inches to 32 inches and weighing from 70 LBS to over 100 pounds. Females: from 18 inches to 28 inches and weighing from 50 to over 80 pounds. Body structure should be big and rugged showing strength and endurance.
Showing Rules: Follow the above standards: Dogs must be untrimmed and unaltered. Tails are held down in a normal stance. Exception—Dogs may be showed if altered by a vet and a handler has a statement from the vet. It is hoped that the standards will help both the breeder and the show judge in the selection of the dogs that will better the breed and make dogs more enjoyable to their owners. The American Bulldog was developed in early years for the purpose of catching and holding wild pigs and cattle. It was also used as a fighting dog that had no equal. The American Bulldog is still used in many places to work with pigs and cattle, but human laws and common sense has stopped most of the fighting of dogs. Today the American Bulldog is used for a family pet and a fearless guard dog. Old people and ladies living alone have made the American Bulldog the preferred family guard dog. It is said that anyone can sleep soundly with the knowledge that the family American Bulldog is on sentry duty all night. From the beginning in southern farm communities the love of the American Bulldog has spread nation wide and to many other countries. BBC Standard approved by Melvin Hopper 1995 Update! Docked tails allowed. Small dogs not to be considered for conformation. Eyes any color. Aggressive dogs not to be considered.
ONE OF THE THINGS MR. JOHNSON AND MR. SCOTT HAD IN COMMON WAS THE VISION OF CREATING A LINE OF BLACK AB. THEY PURSUED THEIR COMMON GOAL BY USING DIFFERENT OUTCROSSES, BUT THEY BOTH SUCCEEDED AT OBTAINING BLACK SPECIMENS THAT FIT THE ORIGINAL STANDARD FOR BOTH THEIR PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS.

AS AN ADDITIONAL NOTE OF INTEREST, I’D LIKE TO SHARE THAT BLACK BULLDOGS EXISTED IN THE ANCESTOR OF THE AB, THE “VICTORIAN BULLDOG”.

The question is legitimate. Why a color so dominant as black became rare to the point of having us raise our eyebrows when we see a black AB? The answer is VERY simple, even though it implies a basic knowledge of the law of genetics. – A dominant color manifests in the offspring unless overridden by the presence of the same recessive color on both side (sire and dam). In other words, a predominance of white dogs will be born from the breeding of two black dogs that have white as recessive. – White has always been the most represented color in both the Victorian and the American Bulldog (their alternative name used to be English Whites), therefore, when mating a colored bulldog with a white one, the majority of the offspring, even the colored ones, had white recessive and, when bred to another specimen with white recessive (the vast majority), the offspring would have been AGAIN mostly white. – Black AB became so rare that the new standards stirred away from them, creating a false stigma of non purity, a frivolous choice being that the Founding Fathers wanted the AB to be a WORKING BREED and gave no importance to color. – Genetics is not a precise science, as the genetic whirlpool can, at times, manifest an archaic trait, often after numerous generations. The specimens that present those old traits are called “throw backs”. West Champs High Hopes was one of them, an English Bulldog with size and structure resembling the Victorian Bulldog. The Sugar Doll line stemmed from him. – Throw Backs, BLACK AB have been handled in very interesting ways. The standard people, usually more work oriented, did not shy away from them, but the dogs had to have the drive and the physical attributes to make them overlook the color. It is a paradox but BLACKS had to be better not to be discarded. The show people, even when dealing with outstanding representatives of the breed, decided not to breed them at all or to breed in the attempt of breaking the color. AND WE WONDER WHY THE BLACK AB BECAME ALMOST EXTINCT. My guess is that most people decided to go the easy route and avoid having to educate the cookie cutters, those that haven’t been in the breed long enough, or didn’t care to learn the real story or, which is worst, know it all but decided to attack the BLACK AB because of their personal little wars. THAT UNTIL NOW!!!! I see many bulldoggers that, thanks to a few, are getting less shy about their BLACK AB. Again, the BLACKS have always been and will always be in the breed. Nature does not ask permission and, even if everybody will shy away again, there will always be a “throw back” (not an hybrid) that will manifest, even 100 years from now, and if somebody will have the courage to breed selectively to lock the color and emphasize the working aspect (Remember? In most organizations they are no good for the show ring: WHAT A BLESSING!!!!) the BLACK AB will be saved from oblivion and, in spite of any witch hunt, they will contribute to this breed so great also because so diverse (not a dog for communists !!!!!)
MY LINE: MIURA BULLDOGS
My program is geared towards producing BULLY AB that can WORK (trained with legendary Al Banuelos). After a few generations we produce many BLACK TUXEDO coats, but our picks have been also otherwise colored dogs, if overall the best in the litter. Always matching best to best has been a winning strategy and a cornucopia of fun!!!!
FUN!!!! Do we remember???? It was fun to bring home our first four legged friend, it was fun meeting new people and share and learn, until something went terribly wrong.
Differences are blessings, otherwise the world would be a boring place. The dogs will bring us closer again if we can “agree to disagree” and commit to communicate in a more constructive, respectful way.
Sorry if I put you to sleep! I guess I wanted to open my heart.
Happy Bulldoggin to All!

NOTE: I posted this very article on the bullyvard (now gone) 7 years ago or so. I have seen it copied and pasted by a few that, somehow, forgot to give credit to the source (it happens …lol). I wanted to put it back up on my own site, to educate those who care and for the sake of record keeping. This is copyrighted material, but feel free to share it if you see value in it. I leave it to you to give credit where credit is due. All the best!!!
